This book is the only one of its kind that I have ever read. It has two parts, both containing a collection of short stories. The main character of all the stories of first part is Uncle Arch. Ideally, the first part is named my Uncle Arch. These stories bear some resemblance to ‘Manchosen's Travels’. The author tells of uncle Arch going on hilarious adventures. The incidents are so outrageously exaggerated that the reader can not help roar with laughter.
The second part of the book, named ‘Other People’ couldn’t have been more different. It is a collection of nicely written stories involving real life characters in real life incidents. These stories show what a broad understanding the author has had of human nature, acquired through the encounters of his own life, working as an anti aircraft gunner, prospector, cane cutter, steam engine driver, seaman, and an author and a journalist.
This book is such a fine blend of light and in-depth reading. It is one of those books that has a special place in my heart.
